S.E.A. Engineering was formed in 1981 by president Edward A. Smallhorn to provide engineering design services to clients in the area of machine design and product development.  The initial field of interest was in Ocean Engineering, Sub-sea and Diving related technologies.

In May, 1991, S.E.A. Engineering became a full time enterprise. Activities in the field of cold ocean survival resulted in the development of two unique products, a Water Vapour Diffusion Apparatus (WVDA), and a Sweating Hot Plate, (SHP). Activities in the field of commercial and military diving resulted in the development of another product: a Breathing Simulator Test System.

In January 1994, S.E.A. Engineering was involved in the design of a large off-shore, sub-sea module for hazardous cargo extraction from sunken vessels.  Through this and other projects, the company developed a broad range of expertise that can be applied to projects to take them from initial concept, through the development phases to the finial completion. 

The experience of the company includes sub-sea equipment design and construction such as the development of saturation diving systems components and the design of military underwater breathing apparatus.  This experience has expanded to include the design and construction of special-purpose test and evaluation systems such as breathing simulators, for testing breathing apparatus, and thermal manikins, for testing protective garments and performing comfort studies in vehicles.  More recent experience has included the development of freon-free refrigeration systems.
