Performance Textile Testing Instrumentation

S.E.A. has designed, and produces and sells instruments for determining the moisture and thermal resistance of high performance textiles used in the manufacture of military and survival garments. The instruments are a Water Vapour Diffusion Apparatus (WVDA) and a Sweating Hot Plate (SHP).  For more information on these products, please visit the products section of this website.

This apparatus allows the user to perform a combination CGSB/VBW ( Canadian Government Standards Board/Van Beest & Wittgen) type test to evaluate textile samples.  Versions are shown here in both manual (WVDA) and Automated Configurations (AWVDA)

The WVDA has a cell that maintains a moisture gradient across a specimen of a known area. The water vapour flux through the specimen is determined by a manual volume or mass measurement and the moisture resistance is calculated.

The AWVDA is an automated version of the WVDA.  It is shown here on the right configured with three cells.  The AWVDA allows for automated data collection of test measurements in a personal computer (PC).  Because of the way it is designed, the system will allow moisture transport measurement without opening the cell/s.  This is an important feature which speeds up and improves the reliability of the tests by keeping the atmosphere within the cell constant for the duration of the test.  The application software on the PC also automates and simplifies calibration.

The SHP is designed to simulate the conditions at the skin surface of a human wearing a garment. It has a test surface of a known area whose heat and sweat flux is maintained and measured by a computer measurement and control system. A specimen is placed on this surface and its thermal and moisture resistance are determined by the computer.
